about

A few years ago, I was speaking with a friend of mine who is a very successful musician and writer. She confessed to me that she often feels like an imposter like sooner or later, everyone will figure out that she’s actually a fraud.

I realized that I had felt this way many times in my life. After some research, I learned that this is called “imposter syndrome” and is common among many people around the world.

The first verse of the song is about someone who is successful but thinks he’s full of shit. Then there’s a verse about someone who is successful and is actually full of shit.

There are those who really ARE imposters but think that they know everything and deserve to be where they are. Hence the line “Everybody has an imposter syndrome except the fools who run the world.”

It’s the idea that those who should have more confidence lack it, and those who are the true imposters have way too much confidence!

lyrics

Impostor! lyrics
The master of all you survey
Your truth is the fact
Wide eyes hanging on your next word Perfecting the act

One more day another dollar Cash out in the end
How long ‘til they all discover That It’s all just pretend

Lost in the clouds
As I play the clown
I made you smile, like a child
It keeps you up at night Flashes of deep insight
Let’s see how far they’ll bend You fooled them once again

So close to that big promotion
Keep feeding that flame
A caged rat going through the motions You’re a slave to this game

Lost in the clouds
As I play the crowd
Pulled the wool over your eyes

You question all of it Maybe you’re full of shit
Life is a big charade
And yet you still get paid Violin Breaks

You question all of it Maybe I’m full of shit
Life is a big charade
Looks like we all got played

Everybody’s got an imposter syndrome
Except for the fools that run the world
Stoking fears with smoke and mirrors
Turning pebbles into pearls
